Hearing that this issue will only possibly, but not certainly be fixed
after 20.04 is extremely disappointing to hear. I was planning on
switching to Ubuntu for the upcoming LTS release, but after reading this
I changed my plans.

I feel like this seemingly superficial, but practically important issue
represents much of what is terrible about modern software. I like to
call it narcissistic software. Software that is not only a useful tool,
but behaves like it knows what's best for you. Sometimes to be different
just because.

Whenever I see developers reacting to a rising complaint by telling the
users THEY are wrong, especially when long-standing best practices are
violated, I feel like the software is going to turn to shit in the long
run.

Experimenting and breaking the rules is fine and can lead to great
advancements, but many times it doesn't. This experiment is over. The
results are in. Please just end it.
