Hearing that this issue will only possibly, but not certainly be fixed after 20.04 is extremely disappointing to hear. I was planning on switching to Ubuntu for the upcoming LTS release, but after reading this I changed my plans.
I feel like this seemingly superficial, but practically important issue represents much of what is terrible about modern software. I like to call it narcissistic software. Software that is not only a useful tool, but behaves like it knows what's best for you. Sometimes to be different just because. Whenever I see developers reacting to a rising complaint by telling the users THEY are wrong, especially when long-standing best practices are violated, I feel like the software is going to turn to shit in the long run. Experimenting and breaking the rules is fine and can lead to great advancements, but many times it doesn't. This experiment is over. The results are in.
