Using an NVIDIA GTX 1080 on 20.04 with the latest daily image I can confirm this bug still exists. Removing the "splash" option from the /etc/default/grub file variable GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT seems to fix the issue. I too encountered this with automatic boot enabled, and it also occurs no matter which version of the NVIDIA driver I use (except for the FOSS driver). Unusually, this does not occur on my laptop which also has an NVIDIA GPU (in this case, a 1650).
