I have a similar bug with Gutsy. When I close the lid, the screen turn off but turn on back one second after. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400. Sometimes that works though but I don't know why... However It ALWAYS turn off AND turn on AND (if It works) turn off back again.
No problem with Kubuntu 7.10 though.
