I've switched back to the 5.4 kernel and have enabled the 'nomodeset'
parameter.  The laptop has booted fine.  I'll keep using it like this
and let you know if I see another hang on boot.

I've noticed that Wayland is no longer an option on the login screen.  I
presume this is an expected consequence of disabling modesetting.
