Public bug reported: After upgrading 18.04 LTS to 20.04 LTS X started to freeze at the login when using NVIDIA's driver 440.82 or 440.100.
When investigating log files, the following was found in Xorg.0.log: "(EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed to acquire modesetting permission." To prevent the freeze, adding kernel command line parameter "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" was required. Nouveau driver had already been blacklisted, as it has never been stable on the computer in question. --- ProblemType: Bug ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu27.3 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USER PID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC1: jamse 1570 F.... pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC0: jamse 1570 F.... pulseaudio CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=346c2d17-3996-4471-8dbd-02abeb7c4798 InstallationDate: Installed on 2018-07-03 (724 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" - Release amd64 (20180426) IwConfig: enp5s0 no wireless extensions. enp6s0 no wireless extensions. lo no wireless extensions.
