I had exactly the same thing happen to me yesterday. I had 2 file browser
windows open to compile an mp3 cd. From one window I was quickly opening mp3
files to have a quick listen with totem movie player and if I liked the file, I
dragged it into another folder in the second browser. After 20 files, the exact
symptoms described in this bug report appeared.
I then checked my system monitor and found nautilus was using 50% of system
resources. CTRL-ALT_DEL and a new login brought back the desktop, but not
always. At other times (I had the problems at least a dozen times) after
supplying my login and password I just got a brown screen and nothing happened
(I could still switch to terminal with CTRL-ALT-F1). At other times, the
desktop came back but no wallpaper and no icons on the Desktop.
By the way, the MP3 file were on a mounted NTFS partition.

For the rest I really had the same symptoms as posted above.

Please tell me what more info you need.
