If you ctrl-click to deselect a message, then context menu delete either
that message or another message, a message will be selected, on 78 and
linux, for me.

Clearly the best way is to ctrl-click deselect permanently, but the
incomprehensible and unusable feedback here has resulted in it being
accomplished another way.
