Ok, tried to install Gutsy from the "official" Canonical CD and it fails during install, as above. Even in safe graphics mode.
This on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600, with Trident Cyberblade graphics card. A card, if I may say so, that worked out-of-the-box since the 2006 LTS version. My only hope is to upgrade from the LTS version as later versions leave me without wireless (another regression).
