I have been experiencing a similar problem with a GeForce 7300 GT on a Mac Pro 1,1. I also have visual artifacts in 18.04 and 20.04. With 18.04, there are no artifacts or other problems during installation from a DVD, but when booting the installed system there are artifacts after login and eventually programs start hanging. With 20.04, the installation program itself has artifacts when running off the DVD.
