You are right I am new and was too hasty ;-) Thank you for the hint. I also forgot to mention that there is a comment "# Put static boot stanzas before and/or after AUTOMAGIC KERNEL LIST" in the menu.lst file. I hope this is not only valid for debian but also for ubunto (and other linux distributions using grub).
