Billnvd: If the computer is getting to a shell then GRUB should be ok and it is the OS that is having problems. From the sounds of it you could try using UUIDs instead of relying on device nodes to mount drives. This has been the default in Ubuntu for a while now (though I'm not sure if it was there in 6.06).
