Right, I was going to say it looked like your setup wasn't using sssd,
hence my question about /etc/nsswitch.conf.

sssd needs to be configured after installation, at most it adds "sss" to
/etc/nsswitch.conf, but the actual sssd.conf needs to be populated by
hand, or by another tool such as realm from the realmd package. I think
the sssd package never installed a default sssd.conf.

All that being said, sssd *can* do something with autofs, but it needs
to be configured. I haven't used that feature yet, though. But looks
like it gets in the way if not done properly.
