Public bug reported: My Epson printer disappeared from the list of registered printers.
I could not assign a suitable driver, even though a relevant package supplied by Epson was already installed (under /opt). It turned out that the logs contained messages like this one: audit: type=1400 audit(1602529987.370:8039): apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" profile="/usr/sbin/cupsd" name="/home/_opt/epson- inkjet-printer-stylus-photo-px810fw-series/ppds/" pid=29169 comm="cups- driverd" requested_mask="r" denied_mask="r" fsuid=7 ouid=0 As explained in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#AppArmor_Protection_of_the_printing_system, a workaround is to install apparmor-utils and run `aa-complain cupsd'.
