using a cursor theme that isn't included in gtk-common-themes.

This requires further investigation, but I think we can explore at least
two solutions/mitigations:

 - add more popular cursor themes (such as whiteglass) to gtk-common-themes
 - ensure that at least the cursor scaling is correct even when using a 
fallback theme
