Versions prior to 4.0.2-3 did not have the hard-dependency of gcj to
libgcjX-dev: From the changelog:

* Let gcj-4.0 depend on libgcj6-dev, instead of recommending it.
This is not necessary for byte-code compilations, but for
compilations to native code. For compilations to byte-code, use a
better compiler like ecj for now (found in the ecj-bootstrap
  package).

Maybe the package ecj-bootstrap (or ecj-bootstrap-gcj) would be enough
for your needs. It does not have any dependency on X (hopefully now I'm
right ;-))
