I'm no more able to reproduce the error deterministically. This is very odd. 
Now, each time I boot the (same) CD, I randomly get:
- screen corruption with crash
- screen corruption without crash
- beeps
- nothing (the system starts without errors)

The hardware is unchanged, except possibly for some usb peripheral. I'm
pretty sure this is not due to faulty hardware (the system works ok
under both linux and win xp). I tried removing 'quiet splash' but the
system started correctly.

I'm puzzled. I'll try a few more time and then update the bug
description.
