Hello all,

at first dpkg-buildpackage would return an error but upon inspecting
messages I concluded that it was possible a permission problem and gave
up -rfakeroot and run it with sudo:

$ sudo dpkg-buildpackage -b -uc

It took almost half-an-hour in my old 400MHz AMD but at the end I had my
deb package. I used gdebi which advised that the package was the same
version as the most current one and offered to reinstall it. I accepted
and it was reinstalled.

After installation the upgrade available icon appeared and the in
upgrade manager offered to update the same package which I decided not
to.

After restarting the computer I tried to make the xdmcp connection and
it worked :-). However, the desktop was set to a 1400 x 1050 instead of
my usual 1024 x 768. In fact, only when I accidentally brought the
pointer to the top edge and noticed the backgrounf scrolling down I
realized what was going on. I then scrolled the program bar into view
and corrected the resolution.

In all, it seems to be working fine. I'm uploading the package to one of
my websites so all can have it: exportdriver.com/gdm-patched.tar.gz.

Thanks to all that helped me with this. It was a great learning
experience and I come out with the feeling I did something useful for
the community.
