Tested xsane and xsane-common version 0.999-8ubuntu2.1 The file xsane-startimage.pnm is now in the directory /usr/share/sane/xsane. There were no complaints about missing images on startup. The preview window now displays xsane-startimage.pnm correctly in lineart, gray and colour modes. xsane worked properly in the viewer and save modes.
