Public bug reported: Hi,
I am running ubuntu 20.04 LTS on my laptop and have had this issue of the computer freezing ever since I installed this OS. When this occurs, I lose all control of my laptop, and nothing but a hard reset will fix the problem. I believe that this is related to the cstate issue that is most common in the intelbay trail processors (I've seen many forums discussing the same issue). This is because when I pass in the grub-boot-parameter GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash intel_idle.max_cstate=3, this issue never occurs. However, the issue has come up when I set max_cstate=5; so I believe that the issue is caused when the processor enters a cstate between 4 and 5. The downside of this workaround is the degradation of battery life (it does not last for 1/4th the usual time). My processor is Intel Core i7-7700HQ @ 3.80GHz ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04 Package: linux-image-5.8.0-44-generic 5.8.0-44.50~20.04.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.8.0-44.50~20.04.1-generic 5.8.18 Uname: Linux 5.8.0-44-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu27.16 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Sat Mar 13 15:23:04 2021 InstallationDate: Installed on 2020-06-17 (269 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS "Focal Fossa" - Release amd64 (20200423) ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm-256color PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=<set> LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/usr/bin/zsh SourcePackage: linux-signed-hwe-5.8 UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: linux-signed-hwe-5.8 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug focal -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1919044 Title: Dell Inspiron 7567 Freezes/Hangs Randomly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed-hwe-5.8/+bug/1919044/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
