Sorry Dimitri/xnox.  I didn't notice your reply before now, I was
searching for this due to re-occurrence.

No words appear on screen, except Xubuntu logo (I see as graphics/image)
and a twirling thing below that that just keeps twirling...

It'll sit like that for 2.5 hours (longest I've left it)

I just did a QA-test install of today's daily again on
- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e8300, 8gb, amd/ati radeon rv610/radeon hd2400 
pro/xt)
and this issue occurs again...

It occurs only on boxes with lower-resolution 4:3 displays.

This box has two dell displays (technically 2x 1280x1024) but for some
reason one I believe is using only 1024x768 currently, and the daily
(live media) always boots with this box in MIRROR mode so both screens
always show the same thing (the mirror mode isn't unique to Ubuntu;
Debian (non-free live) boots in mirror mode too).

I don't know why the second display is 1024x768; except it dropped to
that when I switched the display from landscape to portrait and I live
with it
