I also had this problem. I was upgrading from 16 LTS -> 18 LTS -> 20 LTS
sudo mv /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.systemd1.service{,.bak} sudo apt purge systemd-shim Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y Abort. (Not sure why that happened and I had to run it again to actually get it to purge). sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade (Software updater upgrade button does nothing...)
