Thanks Thomas! HWE kernel is supported and absolutely fine, but also only has NO_HZ_IDLE=y and not FULL. Thanks for the sar conf and the cron messages, but none of them would change/trigger the behavior.
I still wonder how this was triggered on your system in regard to verify the fix.
