This was very helpful. On ubuntuforums, it was suggested that I check the "Optimus" setting under the "Video" menu in the BIOS. That solved half the problem. Then following your suggestion and changing the Multimedia engine in SMPlayer to /usr/bin/mpv solved the other half.
Nvidia currently works and CPU usage is now around 10%, which I am pretty amazed about.
