It is also possible that you are running recovery mode which basically
skips many drivers, including VGA drivers.

You may want to install proprietary Nvidia GPU Drivers (example:
https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-linux-install-nvidia-driver-latest-
proprietary-driver/) and reboot.

I noticed you upgraded your Ubuntu from 20.10 to 21.04. Will you be able
to run native 21.04 (ex. running from usb live) and check whether you
can have brightness control without recovery mode?
