See https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=331027 This was a kernel bug introduced somewhere in 2.6.20 but now fixed in 2.6.24.. had to give up on Ubuntu for this machine as it simply would not install... now running on an updated kernel with openSuse10.3 LiveCD installer... perhaps the next Ubuntu will incorporate this fix..
