For anyone who sees this, it is a RAM issue. For me, like others here, the hardware is the cause.
Lack of RAM. I installed another 16 GB and my RAM usage went away. Freezes and random crashes stopped. The lack of RAM will also cause PulseAudio to distort, prompting a -k.
