I do not see this behavior with the current version of bitpim (0.9.10.dfsg.1-1ubuntu1) in Feisty Fawn. 1) Start bitpim 2) Connect phone (LG VX6100) 3) Edit -> Settings 4) In Settings window click "Browse" 5) Phone is successfully detected.
