Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic
I just upgraded from kernel 2.6.20-16 to 2.6.22-14 (using Synaptic). After the upgrade my three USB ports no longer function, and my built-in webcam (which is recognized as a USB 2.0 device) no longer works. When I insert a USB mouse, keyboard, thumb drive, etc... into a port nothing happens. Before upgrading all USB ports and the webcam were in perfect working condition. The really strange thing is that immediately after rebooting the USB ports function normally (as does the webcam if uvcvideo is not blacklisted). However, after several minutes they will cease working. If they have devices in them already those devices will continue to function until removed. Once removed the port goes dead. I have no idea what would cause that kind of behaviour, but it's got me quite confused. Immediately after inserting a USB mouse (or flash drive): $dmesg | grep usb [ 17.864746] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs [ 17.864776] usbcore: registered new interface driver hub [ 17.864803] usbcore: registered new device driver usb [ 17.866838] usb usb1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [ 18.220395] usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2 [ 18.361327] usb 1-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [ 18.786242] sda: sda1 sda2 <<6>usb usb2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [ 35.978926] usbcore: registered new interface driver libusual [ 36.013558] usbcore: registered new interface driver usb-storage [ 36.589378] usbcore: registered new interface driver ndiswrapper [ 173.143384] [<ffffffff88038d30>] (usb_hcd_irq+0x0/0x60 [usbcore]) Repeatedly inserting and removing devices generates absolutely no messages. Some other system information: $uname -r 2.6.22-14-generic The machine is an HP Pavillion DV6000-series laptop, with a dual-core AMD64 processor. I am running Ubuntu 7.10 x86_64 Attempted so far: I read in another bug report from several months ago that the uvcvideo module caused similar problems. I tried blacklisting it, but the problem with the three external USB ports remains. (Obviously blacklisting uvcvideo breaks with webcam.) In case there's some relevant information here's the complete output of dmesg: $dmesg [ 0.000000] Linux version 2.6.22-14-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.3 20070929 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.2-16ubuntu2)) #1 SMP Tue Dec 18 05:28:27 UTC 2007 (Ubuntu 2.6.22-14.47-generic) [ 0.000000] Command line: root=UUID=9000f988-aafa-4286-a26a-e9f8381ffc9f ro quiet nosplash noapic [ 0.000000] BIOS-provided physical RAM map: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009dc00 (usable) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 000000000009dc00 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000000d2000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 0000000037f00000 (usable) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000037f00000 - 0000000037f17000 (ACPI data) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000037f17000 - 0000000037f80000 (ACPI NVS) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000037f80000 - 0000000040000000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000e0000000 - 00000000f0000000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 00000000fec10000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000fee00000 - 00000000fee01000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000fff80000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] Entering add_active_range(0, 0, 157) 0 entries of 3200 used [ 0.000000] Entering add_active_range(0, 256, 229120) 1 entries of 3200 used [ 0.000000] end_pfn_map = 1048576 [ 0.000000] DMI present.
