@fossfreedom, can you SSH to the system if you boot without a monitor attached? 
Then you could (untested):
- systemctl set-default multi-user
- reattach monitor
- reboot
- SSH to system
- systemctl isolate graphical (to fire up X)
- pull logs (assuming the system stays up)
