@herwich I am in the same situation as you, since I also need to be on 18.04 for now.
I am having trouble with the display driver as well. My model is equipped with an NVIDIA T500 (same as yours), but installing any NVIDIA display driver higher than version 390 fails and drops be in tty mode.
