I would like to confirm that just installing the latest linux-backports- modules package in Synaptic corrects the issue for me.
Ubuntu 7.10 running on HP Pavillion dv6000 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) No further action was needed on my part.
