It works for me with evince on Ubuntu 7.10, though it takes quite some time until it appears in the printer queue. I'm using the "Foomatic/ljet4" driver. However, I have a HP Laserjet 5P (without the M) so isn't exactly the same printer.
What printer driver are you using? You can get this information from the "Printing" program in the System->Administration menu. The driver name is displayed after the printer name, to the right to "Make and model".
