I'm having the same trouble along with some others on the ubuntu forums. My desktops are running [EMAIL PROTECTED], but the login screen remains [EMAIL PROTECTED], which doesn't look very nice on my monitor(Eizo Flexscan T662-T).
According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage the problem seems to reside in package gdm. This phenomenom came to me along with some updates to GutsyBeta, I thought it was due to an update of xorg. Additionally, occasionally the user desktops also start with that ugly resolution. Seems to me that there's something wrong with the hardware recognition and the system configures the display system with default settings against settings given in xorg.conf. And remember, this thing worked fine with Feisty and in the early stages of Gutsy Beta. Yours Jari J.
