I can confirm that what jkyamog suggests is working with my setup. Ubuntu 7.10 with ATI x1400 and ATI 7.12 drivers. (Dell Inspiron 6400)
placing POST_VIDEO=false SAVE_VBE_STATE=false in /etc/default/acpi-support works for me. My computer suspended like it should but resuming gave me a black screen. Now it works.
