Tim, I followed your advice and yes, that fixed most of the problems I was having. Apparently there was a system update that required a reboot, but there was an error and it just said all updates applied. This has occurred on the past couple of updates that didn't have too many changes, but something clearly got screwed up. I should have done this reboot myself, but I've become too comfortable believing the package manager. I won't make that mistake again. So that appears to resolve the issue.
