I looked at /var/log/syslog and saw many errors over and over again like
this:

Dec 30 19:21:15 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10869]: main.c: Called SUID root
and real-time/high-priority scheduling was requested in t
he configuration. However, we lack the necessary priviliges:
Dec 30 19:21:15 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10869]: main.c: We are not in group
'pulse-rt' and PolicyKit refuse to grant us priviliges
. Dropping SUID again.
Dec 30 19:21:15 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10869]: main.c: For enabling
real-time scheduling please acquire the appropriate PolicyKit
 priviliges, or become a member of 'pulse-rt', or increase the
RLIMIT_NICE/RLIMIT_RTPRIO resource limits for this user.
Dec 30 19:21:15 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10869]: pid.c: Daemon already
running.
Dec 30 19:21:15 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10869]: main.c:
pa_pid_file_create() failed.

So, I tried to add myself to group 'pulse-rt'. I have system
administration privileges, so I used
System>Administration>Users_And_Groups to unlock and select my self as a
user in that group (checked the checkbox). After exiting, I went back
into the same menu item to check if the change persisted. It did not.
I tried again with same ineffective result. I did "sudo gedit
/etc/group' and manually edited the group list, adding my username to
that group. Checked that I was listed in the group when I went through
the system>administration menu again. I was listed in the group. I
logged out and back in. I checked group membership again. I'm still
in pulse-rt. Now I get these errors in syslog:

Dec 30 19:21:23 Northgate-U804a2 gdm[5025]: WARNING: Login sound requested on
non-local display or the play software cannot be run or the sound does not
exist
Dec 30 19:21:31 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10949]: pid.c: Daemon already
running.
Dec 30 19:21:31 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10949]: main.c:
pa_pid_file_create() failed.
Dec 30 19:21:31 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10954]: pid.c: Daemon already
running.
Dec 30 19:21:31 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10954]: main.c:
pa_pid_file_create() failed.
Dec 30 19:21:31 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10957]: pid.c: Daemon already
running.
Dec 30 19:21:31 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10957]: main.c:
pa_pid_file_create() failed.
Dec 30 19:21:31 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10960]: pid.c: Daemon already
running.
Dec 30 19:21:31 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10960]: main.c:
pa_pid_file_create() failed.
Dec 30 19:21:31 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10963]: pid.c: Daemon already
running.
Dec 30 19:21:31 Northgate-U804a2 pulseaudio[10963]: main.c:
pa_pid_file_create() failed.
. . . . and on and on.

Then a syslog message:
Dec 30 19:21:36 Northgate-U804a2 hcid[4946]: Default passkey agent (:1.80,
/org/bluez/passkey) registered
Dec 30 19:21:36 Northgate-U804a2 hcid[4946]: Default authorization agent
(:1.80, /org/bluez/auth) registered
. . .and more of the 'Daemon already running' and 'main.c:' messages again.

I still don't get system sounds. They don't play from the
preference>sound control but I do get sound from flash videos embedded
in web pages and from Totem.
