As we have not been able to reproduce the problem, but still conscious of the issue. We have implemented an update with the debian control file for the next SRU where we depend on python 3.6. By default, based on testing the dependency was for python 3.3, and as xenial already had this, we could have gone into a situation where the python3 was then not upgraded for sosreport to be functional.
