There's nothing proprietary about Ubuntu's implementation of the kernel or the video stack. "video=..." is a feature of the vesafb (and similar) framebuffer driver. If the driver is loaded at boot time, as I described, it should work. I've been experimenting with it and found that it does more than nothing. :-) On a slightly different tack, I haven't taken a look at the specifics of how the kernel is compiled to see what effect that has on the framebuffer. If someone knows or has the opportunity to look, it would be helpful.
