Same issue with Secure boot enable and file system encrypted. The only workaround i find was at the login screen toggle to shell Crtl Alt F3, then login and manually launch the gnome (startx) to see what was wrong.The error was xf86enableio failed to enable io ports 0000-03ff operation. Something wrong in the configuration file perhaps linked with the use of a dual screen configuration. So sudo apt install ubuntu- desktop will allow to run gnome ( without tweaks from canonical). The only problem is that in the x.conf there is a leak of definition for the second screen but i think it's a know bug.
