The latest stable release of Kubuntu (Gutsy) is using libarts 1.5.8-0ubuntu1, and Dapper is using an earlier version so this problem was specific to Kubuntu Edgy. Unfortunately, or perhaps, fortunately, I no longer use Edgy on any of my machines.
