It sounds like gputop is reporting main memory usage rather than
graphics memory usage. But either way 3GB of RSS is too high.

Please start by removing all local extensions:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again.

We need to remove extensions from the equation first because they are so
often the cause of peoples' bugs, and particularly memory leaks.
