I had the same problem with my Broadcom (Inspiron 8600) but it didn't happen with my atheros. I think it's a NetworkManager problem. After a month with the Broadcom disabled I tried again yesterday and, so far, it has been a day without any problem using the Broadcom so I guess that an update has fixed the problem.
