Confirmed in a KVM machine with BIOS firmware. GRUB simply isn't installed when you separate /boot and / on a BIOS machine with MBR partitioning. The installer crashes if you try to use GPT partitioning instead. Unsure at this point if it's the fault of splitting /boot and / or if it's just Calamares doing the wrong thing.
