This is a basic bug that should have a very high priority. Anytime you copy something in Firefox, Thunderbird, any OpenOffice application, or a number of applications, the contents of the clipboard shouldn't disappear after you close the application.
So this isn't just a firefox issue. It also happens with all the OpenOffice applications and numerous others.
