Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Lost access to Ethernet and no sound after installing linux-image-
virtual, linux-virtual, ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-virtual.

Reboot using the Generic Kernel and the following message is displayed:
There was an error starting GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.
The last error message was:
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

Screen is missing icons for HDDs. The network indicator (upper right
corner of screen) looks more like a mouse than the normal double-screen
symbol. The active symbol now looks like a running person rather than
the prior symbol. Ethernet access and sound are active.

Hardware: Intel MB BOXDG33FCB, Ram 4 GB, Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750/2.66
GHz, Ethernet and sound (on MB): Intel GMA 3100 Ethernet, LG GSA-H62N SATA
DVDRW, Mitsumi 1.44 FDD, 3.5" 12-in-1 internal card reader USB 2.0, 2x WD3200KS
HDDs,
Software: Microsoft VISTA Ultimate 32 bit. Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 last update 12 Jan
2008.

Will be adding VMware Server to run multiple operating systems.
