UPDATE: The kernel panic apparently originates in nm-applet. I tried to disable wireless. There are two different ways of disabling wireless, hardware and software, on the Thinkpad (Fn+F5) and using nm-applet. If I disable BOTH, suspend (and resume) works! Since NetworkManager has not been updated recently, it is nearby to suggest that a new version of the ipw2200 driver in the -generic kernels have a problem with suspend... Thanks!
