Public bug reported: Rust 1.89 was released on 7 August, 2025. A great deal of packages in the Ubuntu archive rely on up-to-date versions of Rust in order to build properly, and as time passes, the minimal supported Rust version (MSRV) of crucial Rust-based packages increases. It is very important to keep up with upstream Rust development to ensure that the latest Rust-based Ubuntu packages can be built without issue.
Rust 1.89 also brings several fixes and new features, such as the full stabilization of 128-bit integer support[1]. A full list of changes may be consulted below[2]. As of 28 August 2025, 1.89.0 is the current stable Rust version. Getting rustc-1.89 into the archive means that we will be fully caught up with upstream. This is also the last target release for 25.10.
