Yes this is a big problem for new users, the gui tools to share a folder are deciving in that they don't actually make it possible to share a folder with anyone else because you won't be able to authenticate to the samba server as there are no accounts set up.
Ubuntu doesn't seem to have anything for managing samba users / changing the authentication settings.
