I'm the original poster and am glad to report that the latest upgrade this morning 01-14-08 - a bunch of KDE upgrades in the [3.5.6-0ubuntu20.8] stream seems to have fixed the problem. kmail has a different (and improved, IMHO) behavior, living detached from the rest of kontact, and can now get mail from the secure pop server just fine. Thanks to to the ubuntu & KDE teams for the fine work. hjm
