I must apologize: the problem was related to a manually-installed package, which installed a different version of Errno.pm under /usr/LOCAL/share/perl/5.8.7 (capital letters added for emphasis, they are lowercase in the filesystem) which override Errno.pm installed from the pakages under /usr/lib/perl/5.8.7
